- Story Text:An elite French police battalion has been training its Brazilian counterpart on the use of canine units as part of the Olympic security operation for the Games beginning August 5.
The training has been underway since May 16 at the recently inaugurated Terminal 2 of Rio's international Tom Jobim airport.
The training forms part of several exchanges between Brazilian police and both U.S. and French units ahead of the sporting mega event.
"Thank God, we have not seen a terrorist attack with explosives, but we are taking preventative precautions against this. We have worked with the French Police force - specifically RAID (the anti-terrorist unit) - regarding combating terrorism. We managed to organise this exchange with agents that work in real situations, so for us it is excellent, we are not limited to theory, but are able to practice and get as close to the real thing as we can," said Brazilian official, Joao Paulo Boia.
The drills not only provide practice for security personnel, but ensure the dogs used will be certified.
The security operation being mounted for the Rio Olympics will be the largest operation in the country's history, Brazilian authorities have said, with some 85,000 professionals involved. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
