Summary:A military coup in South Vietnam on November 1, 1963, ended with the death of President Ngo and the installation of a military junta. But the revolt succeeded only after two days of heavy fighting, the worst of it around the Presidential palace. The United States had been pressing for Ngo's resignation and although Washington denied complicity in the coup, it was later shown to have been instrumental in bringing about the revolt.
