- Story Text: Sotheby's auction house displayed five works of Contemporary Art in Moscow on Tuesday (May 24) ahead of sales in London next month.
Among the most expensive ones were paintings by Andy Warhol, Lucio Fontana and Yves Klein. They represent the most radical and influential artistic movements of the 20th century.
An estimated price for "The Two Sisters" by Warhol, a leading figure in pop-art, is 1,500,000-2,500,000 pounds. This work is Warhol's reimagining of "Oreste e Pilade" a masterpiece by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico.
After visiting de Chirico's retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York Warhol was inspired and produced his work. He cropped and repeated de Cirico's original but made a new painting in his iconic style.
Another masterpiece of post-war art is "Untitled. Blue monochrome" by Yves Klein created in 1960-1962. Its estimated price is 1,500,000-2,000,000 pounds. The painting has a deep-blue pigment which the artist trademarked as "International Klein Blue" in 1957.
Sotheby's European Head of Private Sales, Isabelle Paagman, said these works were brought from different private collections.
"These are European and American artists. These works are each iconic and symbolise the most important works that these artists have created. We are extremely proud to have these here together as a collection," she said.
The work by Lucio Fontana "Spatial concept. Waiting", finished in 1968, is considered by Sotheby's as the most powerful and energetic among the artist's works. He cut through the canvas to create a three-dimensional space. Its estimated price is 1,300,000-1,800,000 pounds.
The work "Untitled", by the American sculptor Alexander Calder is estimated to go for between 800,000 and 1,200,000 pounds. The artist was an originator of the mobile, a type of moving sculpture. The work, finished in 1955, represents this art movement.
