- Story Text:Clashes erupted on the streets of Brussels on Tuesday (May 24) during a protest against government reform proposals on wages, working hours and raising the retirement age to 67.
Police said 60,000 demonstrators from trade unions took part in the demonstration against proposed measures from Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel's government, which include scrapping the maximum 38-hour working week and raising it to 45 hours a week.
Water cannons were used to disperse protesters, who threw rocks, wood, firecrackers and barricades at riot police. Some protesters set fire to banners, and others were injured in the clashes.
Tuesday's demonstration was the first in a series of actions planned for the coming months to mark two years since Michel's government took power. Strikes are due to be held on June 24 and October 7. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
