- Story Text:An American computer programmer won Vietnam's second international marathon in Hanoi, on Sunday (January 3) in a victory he hopes will promote U.S.-Vietnamese relations. Doug Kurtis of Northville, Michigan, covered the 42-kilometer in two hours 39 minutes 14 seconds. 40-year-old Kurtis, who has won 30 marathons in his career, led the pack for most of the race, enthusiastically cheered by Vietamese spectators. In second place was Hong Hong lawyer Tim Soutar and Vietnamese farmer Huynh Trong Thong third. A total of 133 men and 17 women participated in the event, the first international marathon ever held in Hanoi and the second in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City last year hosted the first. After his victory, he said: "If this is a step toward good relations between the Untied States and Vietnam, then it's great." Kurtis wore a T-shirt saying "Good morning, Vietnam" - the title of a U.S. movie about the Vietnam war. Dang Thi Teo of Vietnam won the women's marathon, collapsing at the finish line with a time of 3:25:51. Last month President George Bush eased restrictions on the U.S. trade embargo imposed on Vietnam in 1975 by allowing American businessmen to set up offices and sign contracts.
