- Story Text: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and hundreds of soccer fans came to Kiev St. Michael's Square on Sunday (May 22) to wish good luck to the country's national soccer team.
The team was leaving for training ahead of the Euro 2016 tournament in France.
Fans cheered and waved Ukrainian flags as the team lead by its captain Ruslan Rotan posed on stage decorated with soccer balls and symbols of the upcoming championship.
President Poroshenko saluted every player with a handshake and said he trusted in their success.
"I'm certain that football is still playing the very important role (to unite Ukrainian people). And we have all chances in the nearest future to sing the football anthem and the national Ukrainian anthem in Donetsk under the Yellow-and-Blue flags," Poroshenko said.
At Euro 2016, Ukraine will play their opening match in Group C against world champions Germany on June 12 before facing Northern Ireland and Poland. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
