  • Story Text: Democratic Party presidential candidate Bernie Sanders visited the border fence dividing San Diego, California from Tijuana, Mexico while campaigning in the Golden State on Saturday (May 21).
    Sanders remained on the U.S. side of the border at Friendship Park in San Diego opposite the Mexican border city of Tijuana.
    Calling for comprehensive immigration reform and a path to citizenship, the candidate spoke through the fence while fielding questions from journalists on the Mexican side of the border.
    "Well, what I think is that the United States has got to move forward with comprehensive immigration reform. We have 11 million people in the United States who are now undocumented and I believe they deserve a path towards citizenship. I am not in favor of the current deportation policies. I believe that what immigration reform means is uniting families, not dividing families and if elected president that is what I will try to do," Sanders said.
    Sanders' immigration position stands in stark contrast to the Republican party's presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump, who has promised to deport undocumented workers and build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.
