- Story Text: The secretary of soccer's law-making organisation says video assistant referees would not be introduced before 2018 or even 2019.
Speaking on Friday (May 20) at the end of the first official workshop on experiments with video assistant referees, held in Netherlands, Lukas Brud, secretary of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), said 'live' experiments would probably begin next year, with potential implementation of the system in 2018 or 2019.
Leagues and associations interested in conducting the IFAB-approved experiments over the next two years saw the technology in action, with the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) demonstrating how their offline trials worked during an Eredivisie match between Heracles Almelo and FC Utrecht on Thursday evening.
FIFA Head of Refereeing Massimo Busacca stressed that the referee's position was paramount and only if they were unsure would they go to a video assistant referee. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
