- Story Text: Thousands marched near the Sao Paulo home of Brazil's interim president, Michel Temer, on Sunday (May 22) demanding the government not defund social programmes they say are vital in the South American country.
Temer was handed the reins of Latin America's largest economy after the Senate suspended leftist President Dilma Rousseff and put her on trial for breaking budget rules.
He has pledged a series of business friendly reforms to drag Brazil out of its worst recession in decades.
Detractors say the government's plans for austerity will eat away at social programmes millions of Brazilians rely on.
The demonstration was organized by several social movements who called for a halt in any plans for austerity that would weaken social programmes.
"For a president who nobody elected and who also wants to put forward an agenda that nobody voted for. This agenda of attacking social rights, this agenda of cutting social programmes that the Brazilian people have reached, nobody defined this, nobody approved of this at the voting booth. That's why the people are going to bring down this agenda in the streets," said the president of the Homeless Workers' Movement (MTST), Guilherme Boulos.
"To take down this government and block an agenda that is absolutely nefarious for the Brazilian people. They want to end public education, public health, and in all truth they want to tear away the social rights guaranteed by the constitution" said Edson Carneiro "o Indio", the secretary general of the Intersindical labour group.
Sunday's march started at a Sao Paulo park before marching towards Temer's home. Security forces successfully blocked roads leading to Temer's residence and the crowd never actually reached his home.
Local outlets reported the president left his home for capital Brasilia earlier than expected on Sunday before the throng, estimated to be some 3,000 people, arrived near his private residence. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
