- Story Text: Thousands took to the streets in the third Equality March for LGBT rights in Lima on Saturday (May 21).
The demonstrators made their way through downtown streets carrying signs calling for gay rights and marriage equality.
"We are demanding the government to please be concerned about us too. To not marginalize us and cast us aside seeing as it has already said it would support us and give us the rights we deserve many times," one demonstrator, Pablo Tello said.
Bills to grant same-sex unions have been proposed in the country in the past, only to later be shelved.
The spokesperson for the Peru's Marriage Equality Collective, Gabriela Zavaleta, told Reuters the group was pushing for a series of laws aimed at benefiting LGBT citizens that go beyond marriage equality.
"We've got some 10,000 to 15,000 people who have all come out to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual rights in Peru. We want to push a platform for full rights; complete recognition, marriage equality, a gender identity law, hate crimes (laws), discrimination, and a lot of other demands," Zavaleta said.
Former Peruvian presidential candidate Veronika Mendoza said her Frente Amplio would continue to fight for 'full equality' from Congress.
"We are here as the Frente Amplio (political coalition) to join this equality march, the third equality march because we are firmly dedicated to full equality of rights without any kind of discrimination. We are going to continue to work in Congress, in the streets, wherever we are, for more equality in our country," the lawmaker said.
Peru does not recognize any form of same-sex unions.
The country lags behind many of its South American neighbours including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay which currently recognize same-sex marriage rights. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
