I think they are the most improved team in the tournament and they did a great job throughout the two and a half, three weeks that we've been in Russia and tonight we're a very good opponent and came hard in the third period. Looking on shots and goals and some of the saves that our goal tender made, I thought they mounted a very good push." JOURNALISTS (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. ICE HOCKEY TEAM COACH, JOHN HYNES, SAYING: "I think both teams came to play extremely hard. We knew coming into the game that Canada has got a team that has excellent players but I think the coaching staff does a great job. They are highly motivated, they are structured and, you know, they are one of the better teams in the tournament for a reason, it is not just because of talent." - Story Text: Holders Canada reached a world championship final against Finland by beating the United States 4-3 on Saturday (May 21) thanks to Ryan Ellis' goal early in the third period of a pulsating match.
Canada got off to a fine start as they moved into a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period following goals from Brendan Gallagher and Brad Marchand.
But they were stunned when the Americans turned the match around in seven second-period minutes as Auston Matthews scored on the powerplay before goals from David Warsofsky and Tyler Motte put the U.S. ahead 3-2.
Canada went into the final period level after Derick Brassard scored on the powerplay.
The defending champions took the lead through Ellis' fierce slapshot early in the third period and never looked back as they moved into the showpiece match.
