- Story Text:Canadian Xavier Dolan, who two years ago became the youngest director to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival, says he felt 'no pressure' bringing his new film to Cannes.
Family drama 'Juste la fin du monde' (It's Only the End of the World) is one of 21 films competing for the Palme d'Or.
"There has never been any pressure but there is a possibility of pain and grief whenever the reviews are published and then people -- you finally get to discover what people see in what - of what you've seen for them -- you have seen a movie - you've imagined something, you are trying to share that vision with them, and now how they will see it will be how the world will probably see it for the most," he told Reuters Television on Friday (May 20), the day after his film's premiere in Cannes.
The 27-year-old, who won the Jury Prize with "Mommy" in Cannes in 2014, explained what he hopes audiences will take away from his latest film.
"This is a movie about the incapacity to listen to the people that we love or try to love and we end up loving badly and ham-handedly it's -- I guess I want to bring them back. I want them to bring back the fact that, I want them to bring back the violence of that incapacity to listen to each other and the implications, the consequences that it has," he said.
In "Juste la fin du monde", Dolan tells the story of Louis (Gaspard Ulliel), a man who comes back to his family a dozen years after leaving the nest, to tell them he is about to die. Filmed with close-ups Ulliel said it was 'like being under the eye of a microscope' but 'fascinating' at the same time.
He was also full of praise for Dolan.
"You have this director that is so passionate about acting and fully embracing what you are giving him - you know that he is here to try to catch to seize the slightest detail in your face, in your reaction, in the way you breath - and I think that was the key to - it's the key of his cinema," he said.
Co-stars Nathalie Baye and Lea Seydoux also enjoyed working with Dolan, Seydoux who plays Louis' sister said Dolan knows exactly what he wants, describing the process as "very creative" and an environment where as an actor "you can try anything."
