- Story Text: Children in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don took part in a military parade on Thursday (May 12), three days after the country's events to mark the end of World War Two in Europe.
Emulating the May 9 parade on Red Square, boys and girls dressed in the uniforms of various units from the air force to special forces marched through the city's main thoroughfare following officers and teachers.
After the march, an adult paratroopers unit displayed hand to hand combat skills, throwing each other to the ground as children and parents watched.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has used the anniversary to whip up patriotism and anti-Western sentiment.
It was the seventh such children's military parade to take place in Rostov-on-Don. The idea was initiated by commanders of Russia's southern military district, which borders Ukraine. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
