- Story Text: The director of South Korea's box office hit Gokseong, Na Hong-jin, said in Cannes on Wednesday (May 18) he was sorry for putting the actors through a gruelling regime while shooting the film.
Gokseong follows a small town policeman's quest to track down an evil spirit driving local residents to commit gruesome murders. The search becomes personal when the spirit occupies the body of the policeman's daughter.
Known for his distinctive style, Na said with Goksung he was trying to produce something more subtle.
"The basis of the film is that a human being can be very frightening. Instead of the tension in my previous films, I wanted there to be a different kind of tension in this one, so that people can be slightly eased," he said.
While the film may be more relaxing than his earlier offerings, life on set was hugely demanding on the actors, said Na.
"I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to the actors. At the end of the last day Jun Kunimura wasn't very happy, he scolded me, and the interpreter didn't even translate what Kunimura said," Na added.
The film stars actor Hwang Jung-min and actress Chun Woo-hee, who for her part said she went through a rigourous process to develop her character, a woman who's place on the side of good or evil remains ambiguous throughout most of the film.
"I communicated with the director through acting. I expressed it first, and he explained about character what he originally intended. We added bit by bit to make the character at the filming site," Chun said.
"You asked about that there must be difficult things in a physical side. Well, I just threw myself into this, that's exactly what I did," She added.
This is Na's third visit to Cannes, with the director having had both his debut 'The Chaser' and 'The Yellow Sea' screened at the festival. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
