- Story Text:The biggest ever photo event in London is opening at Somerset House on Thursday (May 18).
The event, Photo London, runs over four days and includes works from 85 of the world's leading galleries.
Attendees to Photo London will come across works from numerous genres and periods of time, including shots by celebrated photojournalist, Don McCullen.
McCullen has shot a wide range of subjects in areas as varied as 1960s inner city London, Vietnam and East Germany.
One of his best known works is, 'Shellshocked US Marine, Hue, Vietnam' showing a U.S. marine who is shellshocked during the Vietnam War.
"When I took my camera out I didn't just take it out for a jolly walk around life, I took it out to record the things in life that shouldn't be. So, there's nothing particular here. Every picture here is important for me as it's yet another illustration of the imbalance of certain people's lives," said McCullin.
There will also be interactive and lighthearted elements to the exhibition, especially with the inclusion of a pop-up food truck which promises to bring photographer Martin Parr's shots of food to life in edible form.
Parr himself has been photographing dinner plates across the world for 25 years.
"I think people still think of photography as something that's done as a craft rather than as an accessory to other arts. Whereas, if you look at the democracy of photography, you look at the incredible number of people who are posting images on Instagram, the support photography, photography shows are very popular. Photographic books sell very well. So, it's really just the establishment from the art world catching up and understanding how important photography is," said Parr.
Famed photographer Rankin also appears at the event, with 'Rankomat', which allows visitors to take their own portraits in his signature style.
It is the second year that Photo London has taken place and the event runs until May 22. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
