- Story Text: Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi expressed "solidarity and condolences" on Thursday (May 19) to Egypt and France after the disappearance of an Egyptair airplane that had been flying from Paris to Cairo.
The jet carrying 66 passengers and crew disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean Sea after swerving in mid-air and plunging from cruising height. French President Francois Hollande confirmed the aircraft "came down and is lost".
Renzi was joined by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who he was meeting ahead of a scheduled European Union summit in June to discuss migration. The Netherlands is the current holder of the EU's rotating presidency.
A meeting of Europe's leftist leaders, including French President Francois Hollande, which was also due to be hosted in Rome on Thursday was also cancelled, according to Italian officials.
The meeting of the Party of European Socialists (PES) was also to discuss migration and the forthcoming British referendum on EU membership. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
