- Story Text: Argentinean Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra met her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Thursday (May 19).
Wang welcomed Malcorra with a handshake before sitting down for a meeting.
At a joint news briefing, Wang expressed China's willingness to work with Argentina in various fields.
"Both of us agree to support each other in issues relating to mutual core interests. We appreciate the lady foreign minister's reiteration that Argentina would resolutely abide by the one-China policy. China will as always support Argentina's efforts in safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Wang.
China is now building a space station in Argentina's southern Patagonian region, which both foreign ministers said it would serve civilian purposes.
"The deep space station you mentioned just now is a key project for cooperation between the two countries in the field of space (exploration) for civilian purposes. I confirm to you that this is a project for civilian purposes, undoubtedly. Argentina can also use it after the completion of this project, meanwhile the deep space station will be open to the public. We believe the successful establishment of this project will further push forward cooperation in the fields of aviation, space and high tech between the two countries," Wang told media at a briefing.
Relations between Argentina and China tightened under former leftist leader Cristina Fernandez. President Mauricio Macri promised during last year's presidential race to review all new contracts with China but has shown no sign of doing so. Among those deals were an agreement to finance and build two nuclear power plants in Argentina in a deal worth up to $15 billion. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
