- Story Text: Canadian Xavier Dolan, who two years ago became the youngest director to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival, believes he is presenting his best film with "Juste la fin du monde" (It's Only the End of the World) on Thursday.
"We made a film which I'm very proud of. To me, it is my best film," the 27-year-old, who won the Jury Prize with "Mommy" in Cannes in 2014, told a news conference.
"That is something one should always think. How can you improve if don't deeply believe in the things you love."
In "Juste la fin du monde", Dolan tells the story of Louis, a man who comes back to his family a dozen years after leaving the nest, to tell them he is about to die.
Filmed with suffocating close-ups, the story is that of family members who are unable to communicate as Louis fails to spell out the reason of his comeback.
Starring French actors Nathalie Baye, Marion Cotillard, Gaspar Ulliel and Vincent Cassel, each of the four acts of the movie based on the play by Jean-Luc Lagarce is segmented with video music clips, giving an opportunity to Louis to break from the oppression of his family.
"People can't seem to talk to each other. They talk about everything except what's really important," said Cassel, who plays Louis's older brother.
"They crack jokes, they say unpleasant things except for what they really feel. They can't manage to say to each other that they love their family."
"When I started the film I thought it would be shot differently, then I realised we needed more close-ups of the faces," Dolan explained.
For Ulliel, the experience of working with Dolan was unforgettable.
"It was fairly intimidating, we had the impression we were filmed by a microscope," he said.
"It is the first time I see a director on the set grabbing someone by the belt and to put them on the other side of the set, it was very physical." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
