- Story Text: Russia and Singapore on Thursday (May 19) welcomed the idea of creating a free trade zone between the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union and Singapore.
During a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Russian President Vladimir Putin said: "Naturally the volume of the commodities turnover would increase if a free trade zone between Eurasian Economic Union were created."
Lee said trade between Russia and Singapore was already developing quickly.
"Already as you pointed out we have investments in both directions. Russian companies in Singapore and quite a number of Singapore companies now invested in Russia," Lee said during the bilateral meeting.
Earlier on Thursday Putin received a number of ASEAN states' leaders, including Malaysia and Brunei.
The summit's official website says the aggregate turnover of commodities between Russia and ASEAN members in 2014 equaled $22.5 billion.
The summit in Sochi is the third meeting between Russia and representatives of ASEAN member-states. The previous two were held in 2005 and 2010 in Kuala-Lumpur and Hanoi respectively. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
