Topless women clashed with Peruvian police on Thursday (May 19) during a protest against a modification to the penal code which would commit women who have had an abortion to 50 days community service.
The protesters gathered outside Congress, sweeping leaflets covered in red paint in a parodic representation of the punishment.
Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters, many of whom were also demonstrating against presidential candidate, Keiko Fujimori.
"They are debating the penal code today which has as one of its proposals punishing women with 50 days of community service, a proposal which has been seen through by Fujimori's base. We are also against the candidacy of Keiko Fujimori for being an accomplice to the crimes of her father's dictatorship and because she does not represent us as a woman," said protester, Sandra de la Cruz.
Fujimori came in first by a wide margin in the first round of the presidential election in April, but she faces stiff opposition from Peruvians who loathe her father, Alberto Fujimori, who is serving a 25-year sentence for corruption and human rights abuses during his authoritarian rule. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
