Robert Maxwell, the media tycoon who built a global publishing empire, was buried in Jerusalem on Sunday (November 10), five days after his body was found floating in the Atlantic.
In ceremonies usually reserved for statesmen, Maxwell's funeral was attended by State President Chaim Herzog and Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, reflecting the nation's gratitude for his investments in Israel and his charity work for the Jewish people.
Maxwell's son Philip said: "We are here today to bid farewell to my father Robert Maxwell, here in the hall of the Israeli nation, a young nation which meant so much to him."
Maxwell, 68, lay in state in Binyenei Ha'uma, Jerusalem's main convention hall, before being driven across the city for burial in the Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives.
In keeping with the traditions of Jewish burial in the Holy Land, his body was not in a casket. It lay on a stretcher, draped in a white Jewish prayer shawl with black stripes. A white candle burned in a golden candlestick on each side of his body.
Maxwell was last seen alive on his yacht off the Canary Islands early on Tuesday (November 5). His body was recovered from the water that evening. According to the islands' Spanish authorities, preliminary autopsy results show he died of natural causes before falling into the sea.
