- Story Text:Dozens of protesters clashed with police during a demonstration in Paris Tuesday (May 17) against a proposed labour law in France.
Police threw tear gas canisters to disperse protesters, some of whom broke glass and threw objects including bricks at officers.
The protesters were mostly young, masked individuals who labour union leaders say were not part of the organised demonstration.
The masked protesters also blocked some journalists from filming.
Police figures suggested a significant dip in turnout at rallies, with a tally of between 11,000 and 55,000 for Tuesday's protest versus 390,000 at a similar event at the end of March.
French President Francois Hollande, whose popularity is at rock bottom a year before a presidential election, said he would not scrap the changes to one of Europe's most protective labour laws -- a flagship reform that would make hiring and firing easier.
Local media reported that 12 people were arrested in the Paris rallies, nine for carrying arms and three for throwing projectiles.
Hollande said 1,000 people had been arrested and more than 300 police injured during the clashes of recent months, with some troublemakers travelling from overseas to join the unrest. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
