  • Story Text: French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing on Monday (May 16).
    Ayrault and Wang held a joint briefing after sitting down for talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
    The European Union's lawmakers on Thursday (May 12) overwhelmingly rejected any loosening of the bloc's trade defences against China without reforms of its economy, including a reduction of state influence over business.
    "For years, China has provided the European Union with a stable and credible market and created a large quantity of job opportunities. We would like to deepen the economic cooperation with EU based on mutual respect and the principles of equality and mutual benefit. Meanwhile we hope EU can objectively view China's development and respect the WTO's game rule and comply with the treaty and obligations," Wang told a joint briefing.
    "Bilateral relations between France and China are historically at their best level, the mutual visits from both Chinese and French presidents strongly testifies to it. As for me, as the new minister for foreign affairs I want to contribute to reinforce this France-Chinese global strategic partnership, first from the point of view of political dialogue as well as our economic relations which need to be amplified in a balanced manner and also by reinforcing human exchange," added Ayrault.
    He then met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.
    Ayrault is expected to leave the country on Tuesday (May 17).
