- Story Text: Hundreds of thousands of people celebrated cultural diversity on Sunday (May 15) at the Carnival of Cultures, one of Germany's biggest summer carnivals.
Despite the cold - temperatures dropped down to 11 degrees - and the wind, the streets of Berlin were lined with onlookers and people, both German-born and immigrant, eager to take part in the festivities at the big parade.
The colourful carnival celebrates cultural diversity, and most of the cultural minorities in and around Berlin take part in the parade, which involves musicians and dancers and floats depicting the country or the community, but many also come from further afield.
According to the organisers, approximately 5,000 participants from more than 75 nations took part in this year's four-hour long parade reaching several kilometres in length with hundreds of thousands of onlookers lining the streets.
The event is traditionally held in the city's Kreuzberg district which has Berlin's biggest foreign population and Germany's largest Turkish community.
The carnival is renowned for its party atmosphere as well as cultural significance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
