- Story Text:Chinese policeman Mao Weidong set a new Guinness World Record by planking for over eight hours on Saturday (May 14), beating the previous international world record set by U.S. George Hood.
Around 10 top planking athletes, aiming to break the record, participated in the competition at a hotel in Beijing on Saturday afternoon.
Mao Weidong spent eight hours, 1 minute and 1 second in the abdominal plank position as he broke the Guinness World Record previously set by George Hood last year with five hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds.
A spectator Jin Huafang said the essence of doing planking was to challenge your own willpower.
"I think (doing plank) needs muscles and strength, which are the basis. They also need psychological willpower. At last, to challenge your willpower is the most important (to win)," said Jin.
Hood, 58, who finished with 7 hours, 4 minutes, 5 seconds, expressed his respect for Mao who was still planking.
"Absolutely a genuine gift, my personal best, so long I've ever...thought I would have to go. But he is up against the best. Too many respects for this man. I mean it, truly," the retired Marine officer and a former DEA agent said.
Hood holds seven world records and has set six Guinness World Records.
Mao said his daily strength training was the secret to help him to last to the end.
"Actually, as Special Weapons And Tactics police, we have lots of strength training everyday. I think the strength training is very helpful for doing planking" said 45-year-old Mao, who has set a Guinness World Record with four hours, 26 minutes in September, 2014 in Beijing.
Guinness World Records official presented the certificate to Mao.
About 3,000 planking enthusiasts, including movie stars and sports stars, are expected to take part in the Planking World Cup Carnival on Sunday (May 15). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
