- Story Text: Both pro- and anti-impeachment protesters gathered outside Congress in Brasilia on Wednesday (May 11) evening, as the Senate pressed ahead with a vote on whether to put President Dilma Rousseff on trial for impeachment on grounds of breaking budget laws.
If her opponents garner a simple majority in the 81-seat Senate in a session that will last into the early hours of the morning, Rousseff will be replaced on Thursday by Vice President Michel Temer as acting president for up to six months during the trial.
Rousseff, who has been in office since 2011, has seen her popularity crushed by Brazil's worst recession since the 1930s and a two-year probe into a vast kickback scheme at state-run oil company Petrobras.
Pro-impeachment protesters said her ousting would benefit Brazil.
"Taking part in this protest is a way of loving Brazil, saying yes to life and no to corruption. Long live Brazil," said local government advisor for the state of Para, Augusto Carvalho.
Rousseff and her supporters, on the other side, maintain that impeachment is a form of coup to overthrow a democratically elected leader.
"It is a sense of social responsibility today being here in the name of democracy, social rights and the votes of 54 million Brazilians," said anti-impeachment protester from Sao Paulo, Heloisa Rosa. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
