- Story Text: The secondary competition of the Cannes Film Festival opened on Thursday (May 12) with the Egyptian film 'Eshtebak' (Clash).
The 'Un Certain Regard' competition is a parallel, more art house-focused schedule offering an opportunity to young directors to feature in Cannes.
"There is the (main) competition, happening next to here, and the 'Certain Regard' is here to welcome young film-makers, beginning directors. There are seven or eight first films in the Un Certain Regard competition. And also more experienced directors," film festival Thierry Fremaux said as he was opening the competition.
This year's jury, led by Swiss actress Marthe Keller, will watch 18 films, including seven from first time feature film directors.
"We are lucky to be here, we are lucky to see these films, especially for me who love to travel without check late. To travel that far, with the films we are going to see, is absolutely great. And to have so many first films, there's nothing more beautiful than what we do for the first time," Keller said.
The opening film, 'Eshtebak', by Egyptian director Mohamed Diab, takes place in Cairo two years after the Egyptian revolution.
The 'Un Certain Regard' prize will be awarded on May 21, on the eve of the main competition awards ceremony. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
