First major test of hyperloop high-speed transportation system to take place in Nevada desert
- Title: First major test of hyperloop high-speed transportation system to take place in Nevada desert
- Date: 11th May 2016
- Summary: LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, UNITED STATES (MAY 10, 2016) (REUTERS) BROGAN BAMBROGAN, HYPERLOOP ONE'S CO-FOUNDER & CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER, WALKING ON STAGE (SOUNDBITE) (English) BROGAN BAMBROGAN, HYPERLOOP ONE'S CO-FOUNDER & CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER, SAYING: "It's not about getting somewhere, it's about being somewhere. We're not trying to optimize the transportation experience, we're trying to eliminate it. So we think this is great. I think you guys think this is great. What are we going to do? Let's build it. So we're super-excited because we are a team of engineers and what we're doing to bring hyperloop to reality is we are working very diligently on building a full scale, full system, full speed prototype. And we are going to have this full system test beginning this year. Q4. That's right." BAMBROGAN TALKING (SOUNDBITE) (English) BROGAN BAMBROGAN, HYPERLOOP ONE'S CO-FOUNDER AND CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER, SAYING: "So we're doing this hardcore tech development and it's hard. But I can say, and I can see some friends back there, that it's easier than building a spaceship. But it's also important. You know, what we're doing is not bringing this team together to simply build hyperloop. We could build hyperloop today but it would be very expensive. The innovations that we're doing is to drive the cost dramatically down. We want to deliver all the value that hyperloop can deliver -- the safe, the efficient, the on demand, the fast, but we want to deliver it at a cost basis that is absolutely transformative. And that's what our engineering team is doing."

- Story Text: Hyperloop One, a company working to develop the futuristic transportation technology, on Tuesday (May 10) announced the closing of $80 million in financing and said it plans to conduct a full system test before the end of the year.
"What we're doing to bring hyperloop to reality is we are working very diligently on building a full scale, full system, full speed prototype. And we are going to have this full system test beginning this year. Q4," the company's co-founder and Chief Technology Officer said at a news conference in Las Vegas on the eve of a demonstration test in the Nevada desert on Wednesday (May 11).
"We're doing this hardcore tech development and it's hard," Bambrogan, a former engineer with Elon Musk's SpaceX company, said. "But I can say... it's easier than building a spaceship."
A hyperloop would whisk passengers and cargo in pods through a low pressure tube at speeds of up to 750 miles per hour. Maglev technology would levitate the pods to reduce friction in the city-to-city system, which would be fully autonomous and electric powered.
Hyperloop One builds off a design by Elon Musk, who has suggested a hyperloop would be cheaper, faster and more efficient than high speed rail projects, including the one being built in California. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
