- Story Text: Israelis observed two minutes of silence on Wednesday (May 11) to mark Memorial Day and remember tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians who died defending Israel since 1860.
At 11am (0800gmt) men, women and children stopped what they were doing and stood still in the streets, in their homes, in cafes as a siren rang across Israel and Jerusalem.
It was the second siren. The first one rang out for one minute on Tuesday evening when Memorial Day begins. Wednesday's siren marks the start of official ceremonies.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin and Israel's military chiefs led the main one at Mount Herzl cemetery in Jerusalem where Netanyahu laid a wreath and addressed families of the recently fallen.
"Both pain and pride tie us to each other, Jews, Druze, Muslims, Bedouins, Christians and Circassians. Bereavement crosses sectors and connects between us. Internal unity is the root of our existence," he said.
The Defense Ministry said on Tuesday (May 10) 23,447 people had been killed since 1860.
