- Story Text: Stars Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick were in Cannes on Wednesday (May 11) to launch their new animation movie 'Trolls'.
Journalists got to see a clip from the DreamWorks movie before Timberlake and Kendrick performed an acapella version of Cyndi Lauper's 'True Colors' which features on the film's soundtrack.
The film, still in the post production process, sees Justin Timberlake playing cynical troll Branch, an outsider in an overly happy world of the Trolls. The actor also provided the soundtrack to the movie, mixing original compositions with mashups of classics songs.
"I always wanted to score a movie, do a soundtrack for a movie but I never imagined that it would be for an animated movie, so it's great, good fun," said Timberlake.
Fitting Timberlake's song writing into the film was a collaborative effort, said director Mike Mitchell.
"We kind of worked, I mean he definitely wrote the original songs but we definitely worked together to make sure that all the songs works, that the story wasn't just stopping to have a musical moment, that the music really is part of our story and part of our characters and he was instrumental in making it very cohesive through the whole film," he said.
"Yeah, he weaved all of the from the classic songs to the originals, he weaved that all together into one sonic template, it's pretty amazing," added director Walt Dohrn.
When asked if he is more like his character or his co-star Anna Kendrick's happy-go-lucky character Poppy, Timberlake joked that first thing he's more like his reserved character Branch.
"Well, before my first coffee I'm definitely Branch. I don't think I ever reach the level of Poppy excitement, so I guess I just have to go with my character Branch," he said.
Directors Mitchell and Dohrn, said they were confident Trolls would reach the same success of it's Dreamworks predecessor Shrek.
"Do you know what I think we've done it, I think we've topped Shrek, dare I say," said Mitchell.
"There are definitely similarities but there are a lot of differences that 'Trolls' has that 'Shrek' didn't have," added Dohrn.
"It's got a similar sense of humour and irreverence that Shrek has that we love and it's also in a way a fairy tale," said Mitchell.
Along with Kendrick and Timberlake, the film features the voices of comedians Russell Brand and James Corden, and the singer Gwen Stefani. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
