- Story Text: One man has died and three others injured after a knife attack early on Tuesday (May 10) at a train station in the southern German town of Grafing near Munich, the Bavarian state office for Criminal Investigation has confirmed.
A 27-year-old man attacked passengers with a knife in a rush hour commuter train and on the platform, according to police.
"At the moment it looks like the 27-year-old has injured another man inside the train, then he went back onto the track and attacked and seriously injured another man, afterwards he left the station, crossed the square in front of it and then seriously injured two more men, who were on their bikes," Karl-Heinz Segerer, spokesperson of the state office of Criminal Investigation explained.
The man attacked in the train died at the hospital, and the others have serious injuries Segerer said. Investigators were now checking witness statements that the perpetrator shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) during the attack.. "During his attacks the man expressed political motivations, I won't tell you the exact wording, which are part of the investigation," Segerer said.
Germany, which is playing a supporting role in the fight against Islamic State, has not suffered a major attack by Islamist militants on the scale of those that have hit neighbouring France and Belgium. However, German security services are on alert and ministers have repeatedly warned of a possible attack.
Over 800 home-grown radicals have left Germany to join jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq and about 260 have returned.
Germany has also been a transit country for militants who carried out attacks in Belgium this year and Paris last year. There are concerns that some of the 1 million migrants who arrived in the country last year have slipped off officials' radar. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
