- Story Text:Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Inc unveiled a new phone Mi Max along with the latest user interface MIUI 8 in Beijing on Tuesday (May 10).
Xiaomi is better known globally as China's answer to Apple Inc, an image that billionaire founder Lei Jun had fostered initially when he founded the company in 2010 by dressing in the black tops, jeans and sneakers favoured by the late Steve Jobs.
Mi Max features a massive 6.44-inch Full HD display, Xiaomi's largest smartphone to date, with a pixel resolution of 1,920 x 1,080.
Xiaomi fans were thrilled of the new phone.
"The first impression (Mi Max) gave me are that it's very big and very light. It has lots of advantage in functions such as battery life, comparing to the (smartphones) at the same level," said 28-year-old Wang Rui.
"(I'm) very supportive of (Xiaomi) as it's made in China. I definitely would like to support it. (Xiaomi products) are very good at (new) technologies, which is in line with the trend of technology, so we like it very much," said 23-year-old student Sun Chengwang.
The company said last month it aims to double sales of smart home technology devices like rice cookers and air purifiers to reach 10 billion yuan ($1.54 billion) this year, up from 5 billion yuan a year ago, as it accelerates diversification of business lines to cope with the saturation of smartphones at home and abroad.
Xiaomi was ranked fifth in global smartphone shipment in the first quarter of 2016, according to research firm TrendForce. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
