- Summary: BERLIN, GERMANY (MAY 10, 2016) (REUTERS) VARIOUS OF EXTERIOR OF FEDERAL INTERIOR MINISTRY NEWS CONFERENCE ABOUT TO START (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN INTERIOR MINISTER, THOMAS DE MAIZIERE, SAYING: "It was a disgusting, cowardly knife attack which killed a person. My thoughts are with the relatives, the injured, I wish them a permanent recovery. The motive of this act is not conclusively clear, the authorities of the Bavarian prosecution gave a press statement, and I would like to add no speculation over motive from afar in Berlin. In any case for the victims, the motive doesn't matter, it was a terrible act, for the consequences the motives are naturally important nonetheless. But I think it's also important to have complete clarity. The perpetrator is identified, he is a German citizen, he comes from my country and anything further will be investigated." A man stabbed four people at a train station near Munich early on Tuesday (May 10), killing one and injuring three in an attack where the German interior minister said motive is still "not conclusively clear".
Police earlier said they were checking witness statements that the alleged assailant, a 27-year-old man who was under arrest and the only suspect, shouted "Allahu Akbar" ('God is Greatest' in Arabic).
But German Interior Minister said he did not want to speculate on motive from Berlin.
Bavarian radio said the perpetrator used a knife with a 10 cm. (4 inch) blade in the apparently indiscriminate attack, which took place around 5 a.m. (0300 GMT) in Grafing, a commuter town about 32 km. (20 miles) southeast of the Bavarian capital in southern Germany.
One victim, a 50-year-old, died of stab wounds in hospital shortly after the attack. Police said three other men aged between 43 and 58 were injured, with Bavarian radio saying one was seriously hurt. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
