- Title: Cyprus: Fighting Between Greek And Turkish Cypriots
- Date: 1st January 1964
- Summary: British troops were on peace-keeping duty in January amid a new outbreak of violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The UN agreed to send a force - which included civilian police as well as troops - for Britain was reluctant to continue shouldering the burden alone. The Turkish Air Force set this patrol boat alight, in one of a series of raids on villages and harbours in the North in August. The Government said hundreds of Greek Cypriots had been wounded or burnt by Napalm bombs. Turkey had claimed a treaty right to intervene unless attacks on Turkish Cypriots stopped. After the bombing Greece threatened to intervene with force. Tension eased considerably when the Cyprus Government allowed food and fuel supplies through to beleaguered Turkish Cypriot communities.
