- Story Text:On October 14 the seats of the Sports Palace in Luzhniki were occupied to satisfy as usual during matches of the most popular hockey teams - the Central Army Club (in white uniform) team and "Spartak" (in red uniform).
An interesting event took place before the match - the gala ceremony of presenting the Soviet representative hockey team with the "Canadian's Cup". The Ambassador for Canada in the USSR presented this cup to Valeri Vasilyev. Why is this prize called the "Canadians Cup"?
Sports enthusiasts will remember that following the brilliant victory the Soviet hockey team scored over the Canadian national representative team in the final game held in Montreal, Pierre Trudeau awarded the "Canada Cup" to Soviet team captain Valeri Vasilyev. Later, however, the organizers took back the trophy contrary to international competition tradition. They declared that the trophy would stay in Canada and be put on display at the Museum of Hockey Glory. This decision caused indignation among Canadian sports fans.
Winnipeg resident George Smith set the ball rolling by suggesting that an appeal be organized to raise money to make a copy of the cup to be sent to the winners.
The sum needed was raised in a matter of only a few days. This "Canadians' Cup" is the exact copy of the "Canada Cup" was presented to a Soviet embassy official in Winnipeg in the presence of the governor of Manitoba Province. On October 9, it was brought Moscow by flight and now the USSR squad is presented with it in the presence of 10,000 fans. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
