REPORTER: "After it was all over prison officials allowed the press to go to the execution site -- to the warehouse to take pictures. Gilmore was seated on a heavy wooden chair on a platform. Behind it was plywood backed by sandbags. His wrists ankles and neck were tied by nylon straps. About 30 feet away in a corner was a square type of tent, canvas, from ceiling to floor. In that canvas were small slits. The rifleman were able to come in the back secretly and fire through those without ever being seen. The warden then asked if he had anything to say. Gilmore said calmly: 'Let's do it.' Two guards placed a black hood over his head. The... ...firing squad aimed at a small white target on his black tee-shirt. The warden gave a hand gesture and there were four shots. Gilmore's body was taken to the university of Utah medical centre for autopsy. The first execution in this country in a decade was over." DAMICO: "He died like he wanted to die, in dignity. It was very upsetting to me. But he got his wish. He did die and he died in dignity." ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: On monday (17 January), the day of Gilmore's execution, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a stay of execution of the death sentence against Texas rapist and murderer Jerry Lee Jurek. Jurek was to be executed on Wednesday (19 January). The death sentence was accompanied by a court order permitting the electrocution to be filmed.
