The leftist faction in the civil war that has raged for three weeks. Soldiers like these claim to have mortared refugees on the Dili docks, to have cut the throats of women and children. "This street appeared to suffer the worst destruction during the last three or four days of heavy fighting. And that's because it marked the border line between the forces of the UDT on the western side of the city, and the forces of the Fretilin on the eastern side of the city. Some shops bear evidence of looting, although in many areas the city seems to have stood up better than any reports have suggested. "A small Dunkirk of several hundred refugees struggled to reach the long boats that will take them out to Indonesian freighters. Indonesia marines landed two days age and were asked to leave by Portuguese authorities. But they come again to escort the refugees and the Fretilin soldiers simply watch. "The UDT still holds large sections in the eastern and western regions. Fretilin has gained the most important victory so far by capturing Dili, but in this war the term victory is tragic and meaningless. There is growing concern that Indonesia will move in to prevent any possibility of a pro-Communist Dili. And so in fighting for independence, the Timorese will lose it."
