SV Cowboys on bulls (3 shots) 3.00 REPORTER (TRANSCRIPT): The rodeo clowns don't work with horses, they work only during the bull riding. Horses are spectacular but an angry bull is far more likely to seriously injure his rider or even kill him. The bulls they use in Australian rodeos are Brahaman or Brahaman Cross. They're bred for nastiness, because riders are more likely to win points on a bull that's hard to ride than on one which is easy. The more points the better the chance of winning the money. Unlike a horse an angry bull will turn on its tossed rider, so rodeo clowns distract the bull. Pat Speedy has been called Australia's leading rodeo clown, and with his partner Russell Frame, works at least half of Queensland's forty or so major annual rodeos. It's a dangerous way of earning a living. There's a big shortage of rodeo clowns. Pat Speedy and Russ Frame can tell you why... SPEEDY AND FRAME (TRANSCRIPT): You could easily get yourself killed, if you're an inexperienced guy straight out of a bank or a TV cameraman or something like that, he could go out there and get himself hurt, yes. REPORTER: Robbers and clowns harbour a certain dictate for the crowds at the rodeos. They believe many people regard a rodeo as incomplete unless someone is seriously hurt. The analogy with the Roman circus can sometimes be very obvious. Most of the glory, and the money, goes to the riders. But courage, an ability to take risks, is something which has to be spread around. Initials OS SPORT - RODEO MARTYN GODDARD Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved
