- Story Text:At the World Swimming Championships in Belgrade, yugoslavia on Thursday (September 6) a 17-year-old California schoolboy who lost a Munich Olympic gold medal in the 400 metres freestyle on a disqualification, faced the same opponent again - and took nearly two seconds off the world record.
In the Munich final Rick Demont finished one hundredth of a second ahead of Australia's Brad Cooper but had his gold medal taken away because a banned drug was traced in the asthma medication he was using.
But on Thursday Demont sped to victory in a time of three minutes 58.18 seconds - half a second ahead of Cooper who also beat the previous world record of four minutes 0.11 seconds held by Kurt Krumoholz of the United States.
It was a night for the braking of world records.
David Wilkie of Britain won the 200 metres breaststroke in a world record time of two minutes 19.28 seconds.
Gudrun Wegner of East Germany lowarad the world 400 metres individual medley record of team-mate Angelike Franks and broke the five minute barrier for the first time with a new record of four minutes 57.51 seconds.
And another East German Roland Matthes, reduced his own world 200 metres backstroke time to two minutes 1.87 seconds.
Altogether nine world and 12 European records fell in the fist three days swimming at the championship.
The race for the most medals in between the United States and East Germany. After Thursday's swimming the United States had 10 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze. East Germany had 9 gold, 3 silver and bronze.
