- Story Text:Two Buenos Aires cinemas were the targets for bombers on New Year's Eve (Monday, 31 December), the night before both were to begin showing the film "Jesus Christ Superstar."
An extreme religious group claimed responsibility for the bombings, and later police caught the bombers attempting to dynamite the offices of Universal Pictures, the distributors of "Jesus Christ Superstar".
The film, a rock-music interpretation of the last days in the life of Jesus Christ, has been the target of criticism from several religious groups. In July, 1973, spokesman for the American Jewish Committee in New York called on the distributors to reconsider putting the film on release in South America in light of "recent anti-semitic outbursts" in the sub-continent.
Last May, the Buenos Aires theatre showing the stage version of the rock-opera was burned down. Apparently the arsonists belonged to the same group as Monday night's bombers. They claim the film is blasphemous.
There were no serious in juries following the night-time explosions, but there was extensive property damage. Office windows were shattered and a shop-front, adjacent to one the cinemas, was blown-out.
The group responsible for the bombings has been condemned by both the Argentine government and the Roman Catholic church in Argentina.
SYNOPSIS: An extreme religious group has claimed responsibility for the New Year's Eve bombing of two Buenos Aires' cinemas. They were opposed to the cinemas. They were opposed to the cinemas showing "Jesus Christ Superstar" -- a film they consider blasphemous. No one was killed in the explosions, but property damage was extensive.
Later, the men thought responsible for the cinema explosions were caught placing dynamite on the roof of the officers of Universal Pictures, the film's distributors. Last May, the Buenos Aires theatre showing the stage version of "Jesus christ Superstar" was burned down.
Offices opposite one of the cinemas had their windows shattered, and an adjacent store-front was blown-out. The bombings have been condemned by both the Argentine government and by the Roman Catholic Church. Buenos Aires is the only place where opposition to the film has been so violent -- although it has been banned in Greece. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
