Summary:May 27 1964 saw the death of one of the founders of modern India, Pandit Nehru, Prime Minister of his country from 1947 to his death. At his lying-in-state, his daughter Mrs. Indira Gandhi, herself a future Prime Minister, was present. Over half a million people came to see his body as it lay on a bier at his home in New Delhi.
