- Story Text:Top police officials from 90 countries began talks today (Monday) in Brussels, Belgium, at the annual conference of the International Criminal police Organisation (interpol). Main issues to be discussed are international drug trafficking and pornography.
A third major subject uppermost in the minds of the delegates to the Interpol conference, is aircraft hijacking . As Interpol operations do not cover political offences - and sky-jacking has been considered primarily just that in the past -- the issue has been shelved at previous meetings because of the political implication. But the recent upsurge of such acts is becoming increasingly a police matter in many countries, and so it is expected that in Brussels during the week-long conference, Interpol may re-examine its position in this area. The United States delegation is said to be strongly calling for all countries to make sky-jacking a major criminal offence with mandatory prosecution and extradition of the hijackers.
On drug trafficking, Interpol is expected to aim at the tightening of legislation against opium production -- including measures for the destruction of opium-bearing plants and a crackdown on secret laboratories which transform opium into heroin, one of the hardest of drugs.
On pornography, main concern of the part of Interpol is said to centre on how effective move can be made against those who supply pornography to minors.
One-hundred-and-fifty countries are affiliated to Interpol, co-ordinating their work across national frontiers and around the world. During this conference two new countries -- South Vietnam and Burundi -- will be making formal application to join the organisation. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
