- Story Text:President Eduardo Frei of Chile drove through Santiago in a horse-drawn coach in the parade which marked the 160th anniversary of the country's independence. Units of the Chilean army, navy and air force took part in the parade.
President Frei, whose term of office ends in November, chose the occasion of the Independence Day celebrations to stress the army's role in the life of the nation. It was, he said, the country's greatest guarantee of progress in freedom and of its evolution in accordance with the dignity of the human person. President Frei, who is a Christian Democrat, is to be succeeded in November by President-elect Salvador Allende, who is a Marxist. Allende's supporters say they are prepared to fight to ensure that he takes office. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
