- Title: Congo: Fighting Starts After Tshombe's Return
- Date: 1st July 1964
- Summary: Following the collapse of the 'Government of Reconciliation' Moishe Tshombe's forces fought many bitter engagements with rival groups. At Stanleyville Congolese Army forces, led by white mercenaries, moved on the town, where about 800 Europeans and Americans were being held as hostages. The US and Belgian Governments arranged to drop Belgian paratroops in an attempt to free the captives. As the paratroops landed, about 30 hostages were shot. Planeloads of refugees - many of them missionaries - were flown out to Leopoldville with terrible stories of murder and brutality. Scores of foreigners and thousands of Congolese are reported to have died. NOTE: Date is approximate. This clip may contain footage from multiple events; exact date or dates may be unknown.
