Summary:Representatives of nearly 80 nations gathered in Blantyre, capital of Malawi, to see the new republic celebrate its independence on July 6 1964. From London, Prince Philip had flown in to represent Queen Elizabeth and to be the guest of honour of Malawi President Hastings Banda. Malawi was thus Africa's 37th state to achieve independence bringing to an end 73 years of British rule.
