- Story Text: Dubai unveiled the official logo of the World Expo 2020 at a glitzy ceremony at the base of the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, on Sunday (March 27).
Thousands of residents and tourists flocked to the famous Dubai fountains at the foot of Burj Khalifa to watch the unveiling which was also carried on large screens across the city.
The logo is a collection of yellow, gold, orange and brown circles interconnected to form a larger circle. It was inspired by an ancient ring found at an archaeological site beneath the sands of Dubai's desert.
"This ring inspired the new logo - one is because it's a circle and it inspires connectivity, resilience and strength because it survived 3-4,000 years. It shows that there was a lot of artistry and a lot of sophistication," said Reem al Hashimi, director general, Dubai Expo 2020 bureau.
The ring, and the archaeological site, date as far back as the Iron Age and reflects the Expo's message of unity, said Hashimi.
"It best symbolised what we want to do in Dubai expo, which is bring people together, unify them around a common message, around a noble message, trying to create a good future, a better future for all. And I think drawing from something that lived four thousand years ago, so if Dubai was a place of connectivity three or four thousand years ago, and it still is today, and God willing, it will continue to always be, that puts Dubai and even this project in a completely different historical context," she said.
Dubai successfully bid to host the 2020 World Expo after competing against three other cities.
Dubai was awarded the event by the Bureau International des Expositions, the intergovernmental organisation in charge of overseeing world expos, in 2013.
According to Hashimi, construction on the Expo site will commence in July 2016. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
