  • Story Text:Visnews filmed the latest housing estate in south-west Moscow, the University district, Feb. 1959. This great dormitory area, much the same as any other suburb with row of high flats, stretches for 3 1/4 miles along the Kaluga Highway.

    23,672 million sq. feet of living space, 50 schools, many cinemas, community centres and other facilities will be erected by 1960.

    In January this year the University region underground station was opened. Visnews was there during the 'rush hour' as thousands of Russians poured from the incoming trains, returning home from work.

    During his marathon speech to the 21st. Soviet Communist Party Congress last month, Premier Krushchev said that since 1957 1291.20 million sq.ft. of living space had been built and by 1967 this would have increased by a further 7101.60 million sq.ft. - about 15 million flats. This is more than the amount of houses and flats built in the 40 years since the Revolution. The eventual target is "flats for all".
