- Story Text:Brasilia - Brazil's new capital now arising in the state of Goias 600 miles north west of Rio de Janeiro - was filmed by Visnews during December.
Covering 400 square miles of high plateau at about 3900 feet above sea level in a healthy climate, Brasilia will be a better answer to the administrative needs of a fast growing nation than Rio could ever be and provide a nucleus for the development of the vast Brazilian "backwoods".
The plan for a centrally situated Brazilian capital is as old as the country itself. The boundaries of a "Future Federal District" were marked as early as 1892 and after repeated abortive attempts the constitution of 1946 finally furnished a practical basis for a pilot plan. Since then all necessary surveys have been completed and construction started for a magnificent modern spread-eagle city with a fixed population of 500,000 people. The overflow will be absorbed by further satellite towns.
Outstanding feature of tourist accommodation is the Brasilia Palace Hotel with its own generator house and electricity supply lines, overlooking the central part of an artificial lake stretching over 25 miles. Work on this crescent shaped lagoon which will incorporate the waters of three existing rivers still continues.
Oscar Niemeyer, the architect of Brasilia, is seen leaving his office with a young lady who runs a tractor company engaged in work on the new capital. Together they watch the erection of the 28-storey Congress building in the governmental district. Modern techniques with concrete allow architects to have daring designs, roofs span a hundred or more feet without the pillars formerly required as supports - the concrete umbrella method.
A temporary boom town of wooden buildings - the so-called "Free City" - forms the shopping centre for the present population of 50,000. Looking not unlike one of the Western gold diggers' settlements it will be demolished when Brasilia is completed.
Brasilia's airport, west of the centre is busy with passenger and freight traffic. One of the well known personalities arriving here was Group Captain Peter Townsend - international globetrotter and ex-suitor of Princess Margaret.
At the southern end of the main avenue ministerial buildings are pushing their steel skeletons into the sky. Spreading in wing-shaped sectors either side of the centre, blocks of flats are going up. Meanwhile the majority of the workmen employed here - many are famine victims from northern areas, glad to have found a job - make dow with rickey sack covered wooden shacks. Permanent homes are being built for them but accommodation is still insufficient. Undaunted by such problems their children romp and play around the building sites and in front of one of the new churches.
The gigantic project of a new capital for Brazil is enthusiastically backed by President Juscelino Kubitschek seen arriving at the airport. A helicopter takes him on a flight over the growing city to keep him informed at of the latest developments, then back to his Brasilia residence, the Palacio Alvorada, where he receives architects from Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro for a conference on building progress. With him in the Palace of Sunrise are his wife Sarah and his daughters Marcia and Stella. Referring to the row of graceful pointed pillars supporting the roof the President jokingly calls his residence "my cardiogram".
President Kubitschek has repeatedly stated that he intends to end his term of office in Brasilia. If everything goes according to plan Brazil's new metropolis should be completed by April 1961. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
