- Story Text:French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday (March 7) the U.S.'s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel did not help "resolving the conflict" in the Middle East region.
Speaking at the gala dinner event for CRIF, France's umbrella group for Jewish organisations, Macron also condemned the boycotting Jewish or Israeli products and pledged to tackle online hate speech and anti-Semitism.
The president of CRIF Francis Kalifat responded to Macron by saying: "If you'll allow me, Mr. President, to make this wish for your next trip to Israel. That France recognises Jerusalem as the capital of Israel."
In early December, U.S. President Donald Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy by announcing the United States recognised Jerusalem - home to major Muslim, Jewish and Christian holy sites - as the capital of Israel and would move its embassy there.
Shortly after the announcement was made, Macron said he did not support Trump's decision. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
