Summary:Villages in Zambia were terrorised by a fanatical religious sect the Lumpa Church. Mass graves were dug for the victims of the disorders. Hundreds died before the outbreak was suppressed. The Lumpas were followers of Alice Lenshina, 45-year-old self-styled 'Prophetess', who claimed to have risen from the dead to stamp out witchcraft. Mrs. Lenshina eventually gave herself up, issued a peace appeal to her followers, and was taken off to prison. NOTE: Date is approximate.
